OuR History
In 2018, recognizing a need for more local funding to support promising health initiatives, a group of Imperial Valley civic leaders joined forces to create the Imperial Valley Wellness Foundation (IVWF). IVWF is a tax-exempt public charity under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code formed to advance the health and wellness of vulnerable populations in Imperial County. Here’s what has happened since then…

IVWF Receives $7.5 million from AHF
In January 2025, IVWF received a historic, $7.5 million contribution from San Diego-based Alliance Healthcare Foundation. The funds will allow IVWF to operate in perpetuity, and provide IVWF, its partner organizations, and the greater Imperial Valley community greater autonomy in directing resources where they are needed most. This unprecedented shift of resources, with the intent of broad community control, is among the first of its kind in the United States.

Partner on CA and Federal Proposals
IVWF is invited to partner on state and national funding proposals and economic development efforts, including California Jobs First and the Lithium Recompete federal proposal for community engagement work.
IVWF serves as a co-convener in the CA Jobs First-Southern Border Coalition.

Role as Intermediary
IVWF becomes a trusted intermediary for partner grant programs and community engagement. Partners include Berkshire Hathaway Energy, Sisters of St. Joseph, Imperial Irrigation District, SCAN Foundation, Trust for Civic Life.

First Learning Exchange
IVWF convened its first Learning Exchange that brought together nonprofits from the most vulnerable communities in the County along with local government, business and philanthropic funders to learn about the top priorities for each community.

Inaugural Executive Director
The IVWF board of directors hires Roque Barros, Jr. as its inaugural executive director.
Roque was born and raised in Imperial Valley. His professional career has been in service with nonprofits and philanthropic foundations, most notably, The Ford Family Foundation, Jacobs Family Foundation, and Los Niños.

First Mission Support Grant Cycle
IVWF independently and successfully manages its first annual Mission Support grant application cycle, including the distribution of funding.

COVID-19 Pandemic
The pandemic overwhelms the health and human services of Imperial Valley. IVWF in partnership with Alliance Healthcare Foundation attracts $850,000 in critical resources from outside funders to distribute to front-line nonprofits supporting Valley residents.

IVWF is "Born"
Imperial Valley Wellness Foundation receives its IRS Letter of Determination approving its 501(c)(3) tax exempt status as a public charity.
